Thoughts for tech impact on higher education

The Ninth International Conference on Information(ICI9) which held in Kuala Lumpur was to discuss about the impacts of technologies on higher education. The theme of the conference is " Learning Innovations in Higher Education" which will also explore new ideas and innovations in open learning, mobile learning and e-learning and their impact on higher education. I think that this conference will be very important for us because now we are entering the technology era so mostly the devices that we used are mostly electronic devices.

E-learning would be a useful method us to use in higher education. It is because we can simply access to the web and simply key in the info that we want to find rather than finding a book which we does not know about the contains. This will waste all the time of the students in the university. Besides that, we can get all the lecture without missing a word.

ICI9 is aimed to stimulate and exchange ideas and experiences among participants institution which I think is good because we can know how is the teaching and learning method of other countries. Like in Australia, they have a system that can help to check for plagiarism which the student can easily check whether their articles is the same or not.

Therefore, I think that this conference should always be held so that we can keep up to latest technology that are useful for higher education use.

Cisco launches medianet infrastructure

By 2013, 90% of Internet traffic will be video and companies must have the right infrastructure in place to capitalise on this trend effectively, according to networking giant Cisco. “Video is dominating the Internet and this is a strain on the network, especially for service providers,” said managing director for Cisco Malaysia Anne Abraham.

To this end, Cisco is offering enterprises a type of intelligent network infrastructure that caters, in large part, to video-based utilities and services known generically as a medianet. The medianet is designed to be aware of media transmitted, the end point device and the bandwidth available and adapts and manages accordingly which involves reformating the video and lowering the broadcast resolution when bandwidth dips

MTV Networks and Time Warner Cable are two large US broadcasting companies that have recently installed Cisco’s medianet and there are 350 medianet systems that had being installed in the United States and other countries. Although Cisco concedes that the effectiveness of the medianet is largely at the mercy of the availability and effectiveness of a broadband network, the company insists that as the Internet infrastructure matures in Malaysia, the medianet will become an invaluable asset.

White House: Pakistan modified U.S.-made missiles - NYT

The Obama administration has accused Pakistan of illegally modifying U.S.-made missiles to expand its ability to hit land-based targets, which would constitute a threat to India.

Citing senior administration and Congressional officials, the Times said the charge came in late June through an unpublicized diplomatic protest to Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and other top Pakistani officials. The accusation, made amid growing concerns about Pakistan's increasingly rapid conventional and nuclear weapons development, triggered a new round of U.S.-Pakistani tensions.

The missile tested was developed by Pakistan, just as it had modified North Korean designs to build a range of land-based missiles that could strike India, according to the Times. U.S. officials said the disputed weapon is a conventional one based on the Harpoon antiship missiles that were sold to Pakistan during the Reagan administration as a defensive weapon, the newspaper reported, but the charges come as the Obama administration is seeking Congressional approval for $7.5 billion in aid for Pakistan over the next five years.

The accusation stems from U.S. intelligence agencies' detection of a suspicious missile test on April 23 which was never announced by the Pakistanis and which appeared to give it a new offensive weapon. U.S. military and intelligence officials suspect Pakistan of modifying the Harpoon sold to them in the 1980s, which would violate the Arms Control Export Act.

Pakistan denied the charge and said it developed the missile. The missiles would bolster Pakistan's ability to threaten India, stoking fears of heating up the two nations' arms race.

Malaysia ranked 11th most preferred study destination

The conclusion was based on the fact that 69,154 international students from more than 150 countries have chosen Malaysia as the country they wanted to study in.

With the majority of students coming from Indonesia, China and the Middle East, the new figure was a 26.5% increase from the old count of 50,788, which was recorded on March 31 last year. The ranking was obtained from the Institute of International Education. The ministry’s target to have 80,000 international students by 2010 was achievable.

The ministry has already given the green light for Newcastle University of Medicine to set up a branch campus at Iskandar Malaysia’s Educity in Nusajaya, Johor. It is understood that local conglomerates are negotiating with the Korean Maritime Univer-sity, Southampton University, Royal Holloway University, King’s College London, the Univer-sity of Birmingham and Murdoch University to set up branch campuses in Malaysia.

New law on the cards to act against degree mills

The Higher Education Ministry is drafting a new law to give it more powers to act against degree mills in the country.Under current higher education laws, the ministry could take action against errant education providers only if they were registered as a university or college, or have an operation in the country.

Under the Private Higher Education Institutions Act, all private education service providers operating on Malaysian soil were required to register with the ministry and get its approval before they could run any programmes, including online and distance learning programmes. If they are not registered as an educational in Malaysia the Institution do not have power to take any action against them. Details were still being finalised but the registry would likely be implemented by the end of the year.

First Year in UMS

The year I enter UMS is July, 2007. On that time, we had to join the "Minggu Suai Mesra" (MSM) for a week. At there, we have the chance for going around UMS and know all the area in UMS and also the history of UMS. During the MSM, we have to slept late at night and have to wake up early in the morning. So mostly we cannot concentrate on what their are talking about. During the sunrise, we can see the beautiful view at "Kompleks Sukan". Then, we start the life like a student in UMS.

Outstanding Assignments & Projects

There are a few outstanding assignments and projects that I had being involved in this 2 years. One of it is when I was taking "Kesusasteraan dan Gender". When I was taking the subject we need to create a video that are related to that subject. Therefore, we need to act and is recorded.

I was acting as a father in the act and we try to make is as a reality that the other people had faced in the family. We need to run to a lot of places in UMS to take different scene. One of the scene is at SKTM where I was hit by a car.

There are also some other amazing projects such as project in database and software engineering. It is because we need to create a system that link with web page and database. Therefore, I think it is very challenging. I need to study about the PHP, WAMP and also some graphic design. It is very challenging when you can not think of the solution but with the cooperation of team member then most of the problem also can be solved.

Not only that, when I was taking "Penghantar Kepada Keusahawan", we need to think an idea to sell some product. After having meeting with the other member, we came out with a solution that is selling T-shirt. As a result, we manage to have some order from a few course. The design is shown as below:

MY FYP

FYP Title : Optimization of Term Weights in Summarizing Articles Stored Relational Database (Multiple Attribute)

Does anyone understand about what is this system about??? At here let me briefly tell you what my FYP is about.

AS we can know, nowadays the most important thing in computer is the data inside it. The software and hardware can be replace is malfunction but what if the data is lost or cannot be used?? Can we buy back the data?? The answer is NO!!!

However this data can be categorize so that they can give us important and accurate information. Like in the library the book is arrange according to the subject of the book. But how sure is that the book is categorize in the correct category?? So do the article in the computer ... Hence, we need a system that help us to categorize the articles that is what related to my FYP.

In this system, the user can insert the info about the article such as abstract, author and so on into this system and this system will help to calculate what is the important terms in all the articles. From the result of the system, we can store the article accordingly so that they will give us the correct information when needed.

FYP1
In FYP1 is thesis of the system. In this documentation, it have five chapter that is :
Chapter 1 : Introduction
Chapter 2 : Literature Review
Chapter 3 : Methodology
Chapter 4 : System Analysis and Design
Chapter 5 : Implementation

Chapter 1 - Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In introduction, we write about why we want to do this system. At here, we list the problem that had being faced by the people in categorizing the articles. Not only that, we also stated the objective and project scope at here.

Chapter 2 - Literature Review
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In literature review, we list out the method that had being used by other system. From here, we can know the method that had being used and the advantages and disadvantages of the method. So that we can know what method is more suitable for finding the term weights for the articles.

Chapter 3 - Methodology
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In methodology, we list the system development life cycle that will be implemented in the system. Besides that, we also list in the planning to create the system, system design, system analysis and also software and hardware needed for the system.

Chapter 4 - System Analysis and Design
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In system analysis and design, we talk about the current system and also about the design for the system such as design for the database and interface.

Chapter 5 - Implementation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In implementation, we describe the system interface and also the function that this system should have. Not only that, we also describe about the database application.

FYP2
FYP 2 is mostly about the creation of the system therefore there are less documentation and mostly about coding. However, there are also two more chapter of thesis that need to be included after we finish creating the system that is testing and conclusion.

Chapter 6 - Testing
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In testing, we list the testing that need to implemented to the system so that there will not be any error for future user.

Chapter 7 - Conclusion and Future Work
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In conclusion and future work, we list the objective that had being achieve as we written earlier. Not only that, we also list the limitation of the system and also future work that can be implement into the system.
